 Methods of grammatical analysis


Immediate Constituent Analysis (IC analysis) was introduced by Leonard Bloomfield (1933)

In the complete IC analysis of sentences, we cut the sentence into two parts, on the IC’s, then cut each of these two again into two parts, and so on, until we have only individual words reminding as parts. In this analysis an arrow points from each modifier to its head, and you can see in bracket from the levels of modification the total pattern.

Noun phrase

÷Beginning at the end cut off successively each postnominal modifier until you reach the noun head.
